Overall oral health risk is a combination of genetics, personal habits and diet, as well as past history of oral disease, like tooth decay or periodontal (gum) disease.
For the purposes of Delta Dental's Preventive Dental Care Study, adults at higher-risk for gum disease were defined as having had a periodontal maintenance treatment in the past two years. Higher-risk children and adults were defined as having had a cavity filled in the past three years. These measures, although simple, are good predictors of risk because past history of oral disease is a key factor in risk for future dental health issues.
