How often should I visit the dentist?

Seeing a dentist regularly can help ensure that problems are taken care of before they become more serious and expensive.

For most of the past century, the recommendation has been to visit the dentist every six months. This recommendation dates back to the 1890s, when most people had tooth decay. Though it hasn’t been proven as to whether it is necessary for everyone to see their dentist that often to keep a healthy smile.

Today, you should base how often you need to see the dentist on your individual needs.

  • Those at higher risk for cavities or gum disease, or are in active dental treatment, may require recall intervals as short as three months.
  • Those at lower risk may just go once a year, or even less frequently depending on their individual oral conditions and health history.
